DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant

Do you love coconut? Then you’ve gotta try this!

I ended my relationship with regular, chemical-filled deodorant earlier this year during my Mamavation Bootcamp. It was through Mamavation that I learned about chemicals seeping through the skin {which is our largest organ}, wrecking havoc on our bodies and hormones. I had also heard stories of women, battling breast cancer, who were encouraged by their doctors to drop their deodorant for more natural ingredients, simply because of the health risks associated with placing chemicals so closely to lymph nodes and breast tissue.

Now, I must admit, most people have a detox time when they make the switch, I don’t think I really did {check out this video where I prove this point}

,

but I did irritate my pits for several weeks when I began using baking soda, however, I can now say my girly, and occasionally hairy { I see nothing wrong with the human body and honestly, Ladies, if an area grows hair then why are we so hell bent on shaving it off, except for the lady bits, let’s all agree to keep those nicely trimmed up :)}, pits are

happily sporting three natural, toxic-free ingredients: virgin coconut oil, shea butter, and baking soda.

And can I just say, I absolutely LOVE the way my beautiful pits smell!

So, on to the recipe:

  • 3 tablespoons virgin coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons shea butter
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda

Now, I hand picked this recipe from the Great and Wise WellnessMama. You can find her recipes here . I typically also use arrowroot {you can also use cornstarch} but due to my cupboard being bare, I simply skipped on the ingredient and found that my deodorant, which is usually a nice paste, is simply more like a body lotion…with baking soda. I don’t really mind it. I still use the finger-spread method to apply it versus the stick form, and like I said, so far, even after a daily 3 mile run, playing with my kids, cuddling with my hubs, and gardening, my arm pits are simply as coconut fresh as they were that very morning I applied my deodorant.

*Side Note* For those of you who have never switched from a deodorant/antiperspirant, you will need to understand that it’s the antiperspirant that actually keeps the arm pit from sweating, which is simply a way the body uses to detox through out the day, so please realize this DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant does not eliminate sweat, it simply makes you smell deliciously edible…like coconut. 🙂

Now It’s Your Turn:

Have you dropped your old, toxic deodorant yet? If so, what do you use now? Ever made your own? What recipes do you love?
